This uses a slower variant of the selected compression level (-0 … -9) to improve the ratio, however it can be possible for this to make the ratio worse depending on the data.īelow we will compare the difference between compressing the Linux kernel with a compression level of 0 with and without extreme. The -e or -extreme flag can be specified to use more CPU when encoding to increase the compression ratio, however this will take more time. When selecting a value between 1 and 9 it is important to consider what is more important to you, the amount of space saved or the amount of time spent compressing, the default -6 option provides a fair trade off. ![]() By default xz uses a compression level of -6, which is slightly biased towards higher compression at the expense of speed. 0 can also be specified with the flag -fast, while option -9 can also be specified with the flag -best, these are provided for backwards compatibility with older tools and should be avoided. The below example compares the differences between -0 and -9, as shown while -0 finishes much faster it compresses around 6% less (approximately 37mb more space required). Using option 9 will take longer to complete, however you will have the largest amount of space saved. ![]() Using option 0 will complete faster, but space saved from the compression will not be optimal. The level of compression applied to a file using xz can be specified as a value between 0 (less compression) and 9 (best compression). This only works for files that have a known size, it will not work if you are piping content into xz. In the below example we are compressing the Linux kernel with xz with -v which is showing us the current percentage, compression ratio, MB/s, elapsed time and estimated amount of time until completion which is very useful information especially when compressing a large file. The -v or -verbose flag can be specified to provide up to date information on a running operation. In this example, an xz copy of the Linux kernel has compressed to 14.4% of its original size, taking up 79.7MB of space rather than 553.9MB. Strms Blocks Compressed Uncompressed Ratio Check Filenameġ 1 79.7 MiB 553.9 MiB 0.144 CRC64 linux-3.18.19.tar.xz xz file such as the compressed and uncompressed size of the file as well as the compression ratio, which shows us how much space our compression is saving. With the -l or -list flag we can see useful information regarding a compressed. Similar to example 3, it is possible to decompress a file and keep the original. To reverse the compression process and get the original file back that you have compressed, you can use the xz command itself or unxz which is also part of the xz package.īoth of these commands will produce the same result, decompressing to file.txt, removing the compressed file. The -c flag outputs the compressed copy of file.txt to stdout, this is then sent to, keeping the original file.txt file in place. This can also be done with the -c flag as below. You can instead keep the original file and create a compressed copy with the -k or -keep flag. ![]() Compress a single file and keep the original To instead compress all files within a directory, see example 10 below. This will compress all files specified in the command, note again that this will remove the original files specified by turning file1.txt, file2.txt and file3.txt into, and This will compress file.txt and create, note that this will remove the original file.txt file. We are going to cover 13 examples of xz here, showing you common tasks that can be completed and just how easy it is to use.Ĭheck out some of our other compression tool examples:īefore starting you will need to have the xz package installed, this is usually already installed by default, however you can install it now if required.ĭebian: apt-get install xz-utils Example XZ Commands With xz we will typically get a better compression ratio. Xz is another general purpose data compression tool with syntax similar to the older and more popular gzip and bzip2 options. ![]() Flamingos can live 20-30 years in the wild. They are water birds and enjoy living near bodies of water like lakes or lagoons. They will typically fly at night to migrate and find a warmer area when the temps are start to get cool, A group of baby flamingos, or chicks, is called creches. A flock of flamingos can also be called a stand, regiment, or flamboyance.More interesting & fun facts about flamingos The word “flamingo” comes from the Spanish and Latin word “flamenco,” which means fire. Living in flocks also helps protect themselves from predators. they are social.įlamingos are social birds so you will typically find them in pairs, a couple of pairs, grouped up with as many as tens of thousands. You will see them turn their head side to side using their tongue to push water out of it’s bill while the trapping the food inside. When it’s time to for a flamingo to eat, it will turn its head upside down in the water. Flamingos turn their heads upside down to eat. Both mom and dad work together to create a nest, that’s made to fit only one egg and will help protect and incubate the egg. If you look at a flamingo’s nest, you’ll notice that it looks a lot like a volcano that’s made out of mud and stands about 12-24 inches high. In fact, flamingos are one of only two bird species known to consume insects. Greater, Caribbean, and Chilean flamingos eat insects, such as grasshoppers, crickets, and flies. ![]() These are black feathers that are only visible when the wings are extended. Flamingos also have 12 flight feathers located in each wing. The lesser, greater, and Caribbean flamingos have larger wingspans. When flamingos spread their wings, the wingspan can measure anywhere from 37-39 inches. Even though they can grow tall, they only weight about 8 pounds. When standing straight up, the greater flamingo species can measure up to about 5 feet tall. ![]() Their toes are covered with tiny scales called papillae, which help them grip slippery surfaces. Flamingos have pink feet.įlamingos are one of the few bird species that have pink feet. As a flamingo dines on algae and brine shrimp, its body absorbs the pigments which in turn gives the flamingo their pink color. Carotene is what gives fruits and vegetables it’s own food and wild flamingos enjoy dining on shrimp, plankton, algae, and crustaceans. Their beautiful pink, orange, or red feathers are caused by carotene in the food they eat. A flamingo gets his color from the food they eat. As a result we can really experience the night sky painting glow! Tips on painting stars in a night sky It also becomes deeper and darker blue in color. As our eye gradually moves up to the top of the painting the sky grows increasingly darker in value. Notice how the sky color and tonal value changes as we move from the horizon line to the top of the painting.Īt the horizon line we can see a small bit of light. However, he does not just make a dark sky color and then fill it in with bright white dots. Millet uses value in such a way so that the painted stars do light up in the sky. The artist created a lot of soft edges which help to make the bushes and trees that are silhouetted against the sky to feel like they are further off in the distance.Īs well, like the other paintings already mentioned. This piece has a wonderful atmospheric quality to it. Looking at the Starry Night soft edges and varying tonal values It is one of his few paintings that is exclusively a landscape. Millet painted this night sky painting shortly after moving to Barbizon – an artist colony south of Paris. Fun to think of what paintings inspired some of the most famous creations! His admiration of Millet’s work is well known. He would have been able to view it in Paris between 1873 – 1875. Van Gogh may very well have been influenced by this painting by Jean Francois Millet when he created his own Starry Night painting. If you have bright colors in other areas of your painting – that will detract from your starry sky. You must make sure that you are leading viewers eyes to the bright stars in the sky. ![]() Rather, how to paint a night sky is also about balancing muted and saturated colors. Painting a night sky isn’t always just about being able to balance dark values and creating bright areas for stars to shine. Because when a bright saturated color is placed in the middle of muted colors it will inevitably stand out. Every other area of the painting is made up of more muted colors– which helps for the meteor to stand out even more. In addition to the meteor being the brightest part of the night sky painting, it is also made up of the most saturated colors. Everything else in the painting would be darker so that there would be no ‘competition’ of focus. He made sure that the brightest part of the painting would be the meteor itself. This painting is able to make that meteor crossing the sky look so bright and brilliant all because of how he used value and muted colors. Walt Whitman even wrote a few words about the event in his poem year of meteors 1859 -1860 ‘ “… strange huge meteor procession, dazzling and clear, shooting over our heads”. What he saw was a ‘spectacular string of fireball meteors cross the Catskill evening sky, an extremely rare earth grazing meteor procession ( )’. The American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (of the Hudson River School) painted what he saw in the sky in 1860. ![]() While also bringing in light values to the areas of the painting where the stars or moon are painted in.įrederic Edwin Church – The Meteor of 1860 Frederick Edwin Church, The Meteor of 1860 One important thing we learn from this painting, is that one must work with dark values a lot when learning how to paint a night sky. The viewer is able to see the figures in the landscape because they are lit up in the foreground and are much brighter in contrast to the dark landscape. In addition, we can see the bright stars that are in the dark areas of the sky away from the moon. As a result, the light from the moon creates a glow in the night sky painting. Although the sky is also dark, the landscape is even darker. In the painting, the landscape and trees are very dark in value. The night sky in this painting feels like a natural night sky because the artist balanced the values in the painting so that we could feel the darkness of the sky. This painting depicts Joseph, Mary and Jesus seeking refuge from possible persecution by Herod. This oil on copper painting by Adam Elsheimer is thought to be the very first rendering of the night sky in Renaissance art. ![]() But there are high chances that it did not happen exactly as shown in the video which some people might relate to the real events that happened. To transform the coordinates from one space to the next coordinate space we'll use several transformation matrices of which the most important are the model, view and projection matrix. You're probably quite confused by now by what a space or coordinate system actually is so we'll explain them in a more high-level fashion first by showing the total picture and what each specific space represents. Those are all a different state at which our vertices will be transformed in before finally ending up as fragments. There are a total of 5 different coordinate systems that are of importance to us: The advantage of transforming them to several intermediate coordinate systems is that some operations/calculations are easier in certain coordinate systems as will soon become apparent. Transforming coordinates to NDC is usually accomplished in a step-by-step fashion where we transform an object's vertices to several coordinate systems before finally transforming them to NDC. These NDC are then given to the rasterizer to transform them to 2D coordinates/pixels on your screen. ![]() What we usually do, is specify the coordinates in a range (or space) we determine ourselves and in the vertex shader transform these coordinates to normalized device coordinates (NDC). That is, the x, y and z coordinates of each vertex should be between -1.0 and 1.0 coordinates outside this range will not be visible. OpenGL expects all the vertices, that we want to become visible, to be in normalized device coordinates after each vertex shader run. In the last chapter we learned how we can use matrices to our advantage by transforming all vertices with transformation matrices. Having independent depth-cueing for surface (nearest-point) and interior (brightest-point) allows for more visualization possibilities.Coordinate Systems Getting-started/Coordinate-Systems For both kinds, depth-cueing is turned off when set to zero (i.e.100% of intensity in back to 100% of intensity in front) and is on when set at 0 < n 100 (i.e.( 100 − n)% of intensity in back to 100% intensity in front). Interior Depth-Cueing works only on brightest-point projections. Surface Depth-Cueing works only on nearest-point projections and the nearest-point component of other projections with opacity turned on. Two kinds of depth-cueing are available: Surface Depth-Cueing and Interior Depth-Cueing. ![]() The trade-off for this increased realism is that data points shown in a depth-cued image no longer possess accurate densitometric values. The depth-cueing parameters determine whether projected points originating near the viewer appear brighter, while points further away are dimmed linearly with distance. Surface/Interior Depth-Cueing Depth cues can contribute to the three-dimensional quality of projection images by giving perspective to projected structures. |
